Coronado A/V Elegance

This month's featured installation previews an approximately eight thousand square foot residence on Coronado. The home's spectacular interior features "stealth" audio and video systems integrated seamlessly throughout the home's décor. Modern Home Systems provided design and coordination for all areas of the project involving our electronic systems. This included generating working drawings of room elevations, construction details, cabinetry, and motorization. Audio, video, mechanization, draperies, blinds, and lighting were all elegantly controlled through the wireless color touch screen panels on each level of the home.

Living Room - Artwork in place

The primary living space in the home is located on the middle level. A beautiful original painting is the centerpiece of the room located above the fireplace. Modern Home Systems was tasked with providing a solution for a television and video display in the room.

Because there was no available cabinet space for a traditional television or components, we designed a completely invisible system for the room. Firstly, the 42" flat plasma display was recessed into a niche above the fireplace. To address the issue of the painting, we suggested an art moving mechanism to move the painting when the display was turned on from the touch screen. Flush-mount Sonance speakers were installed in the wall above the display. All of the associated components for the local A/V system were located in the Lanai on the story below to completely eliminate the need for components based in this room.

Living Room - Plasma revealed

The final result was a spectacular room with zero space or aesthetic impact from the audio and video system. All equipment, the picture moving mechanism, and the display are controlled simply and seamlessly through the Crestron color touch panel in the room. The owners simply press the source that they wish to view; satellite, cable, VCR, or DVD and the automation system does the rest. Literally one touch of a button activates the entire system. We can provide magic solutions at this level with no guesswork. We regularly provide equipment, control, and activation that operate flawlessly and reliably with proven and well-established technologies. Of course, a house at this level wouldn't be complete without a real theater system. Once again tasked with providing a high performance theater while minimally impacting the room from an aesthetic standpoint, Modern Home System's designers went to work. We were able to recess the video projector as much as possible into the ceiling. This was a challenge due to the structural steel and floor beams in the area. The projector was mounted in a manner that provided technical and performance excellence without creating an eyesore in the room.

The big questions were where to locate the screen and how to darken the room. Screen placement and a dark environment are both issues that fundamentally affect the performance of a front projection theater. We worked with the designer and contractor to create a solution that was acceptable to all. A custom soffit was routed across the sliding doors to the patio to create a hidden compartment for the drop down 92" wide screen and a custom black out shade that entirely covers the glass opening behind it. Very high quality THX ULTRA™ approved flush-mount speakers were installed in the slightly slanted face of the soffit to direct awesome sound into the seating area. Speakers were custom painted to disappear into the soffit; the screen and shades drop silently into the room when activated.

Lanai - Theater system on

The lanai becomes a complete, high-performance theater when activated. The color touch panel allows the owners to choose between the local television or the full front pro-jection theater system. The television provides bright, clear viewing when the room is open to take advantage of the gorgeous view of the city and bay. The projection system is activated for serious sports or movie surround-sound reproduction. Of course, the lighting control system in the room sets the flush lighting fixtures to the correct mode for movies, mood, or entertainment automatically.

Kitchen and House

The balance of the home is provided with beautiful music. Equipment like Sonance flush-mount speakers, rock landscape speakers, and an Audioaccess keypad music system combine excellent sound with very simple controls. The audio keypads were even combined with the individual room's lighting keypads to minimize "wall clutter". Also included is a Panasonic phone/intercom/door answering system that controls the front gate, video camera at the front gate entry, and a satellite television and music system. This residence demonstrates state-of-the-art technology with the custom touch of installation and design that only Modern Home Systems can provide.
